Wizard of Oz The Musical Story
The Wizard of Oz at the Palladium Theatre takes its story from Frank L.Baum’s novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ”. It tells the magical story of the experiences of an orphaned girl called Dorothy Gale. She lives in a farm located in Kansas with her uncle and aunt and has a best friend for a dog, Toto. One day, a terrifying tornado hits her uncle’s farm and while it is at its destruction spree it also takes hold of Dorothy’s home depositing it in a far away land, the Land of OZ in Munchkin Country. When the house falls in OZ, it crushes the Wicked Witch of The East, killing her and causing a wave of happiness in that part of the land.

So begins Dorothy’s magical adventure through OZ. The Good Witch Of the North comes to greet her and gives her a pair of silver shoes (that belonged to the Wicked witch that her house just killed). The Good witch also tells her that she would have to visit the Wizard of Oz who lived in Emerald City if they wanted to get back home. Emerald City lay at the other end of ‘the yellow brick road’.

Dorothy meets three friends on her way to the Wizard – Hickory (the Tinman), Zeke (the Cowardly Lion) and Hunk (the Scarecrow). Dorothy frees the Scarecrow, oils up the cranking Tinman and gives courage to the Cowardly Lion to join her to visit the Wizard of OZ for help. The Tinman wants a heart, Scarecrow needs brains and Zeke (the lion) needs courage. Together, the three companions walk through the yellow brick road – full of dangers; a gushing river, narrow paths and the Deadly Poppies. Their journey ends at the gates of the Emerald City.

When they meet the Wizard, to each one he appears a different image – guided by their own perceptions. Scarecrow sees an enchanting woman for the Wizard, the lion sees him as a deadly fireball, the Tinman perceives a hungry beast and Dorothy visualizes him as a huge sized head. Well… the journey is not ending here it is just beginning. The Wizard has something to hide, he just tells them to go to Winkie Country and kill the Wicked Witch of the West.

So off they go again into unknown, magical territory. The Wicked Witch hears about them and sends Winkie soldiers, bees, crows and wolves to get them. When everything fails… the Witch uses the Golden cap to call upon the Winged Monkeys who capture the foursome and take them to the witch. Well… when the witch takes one of Dorothy’s silver shoes, she throws a bucket of boiling water on her and kills her. One again… its Dorothy who frees another part of the Land of Oz from tyrannical rule. Dorothy uses the Golden Cap to make use of the winged monkeys to take them back to Emerald City.

Here is where the true identity of the Wizard is revealed. He is amazed that the group have actually finished the Wicked Witch, so he tries to put them off with bad manners. But Toto accidentally trips a mirror in the side and an old man is revealed - the true identity of the Wizard of Oz is that he is a man from Omaha who has come to Oz in a hot air balloon many years ago. He tricks them by giving the Tinman a silk stuffed heart, the Scarecrow a head full of bran and pins, a potion of courage to the Lion and decides to make another balloon to help Dorothy return home.

So just when you think its over… there is another twist to the story. Dorothy meets her friends for one last time but when the balloon is about to lift, Toto runs away in the crowd and Dorothy follows to catch him. The balloon takes away and Dorothy is left behind – yet again stuck for more adventures in the land of OZ.

Dorothy is told that Glinda, the Good Witch of the West may be able to help her. So off they set to seek her aid. Glinda is located in Quadling Country, and just like the name hints, it is treacherous land where the four have to face The Fighting Trees, the Hammer Heads and China Country. On the way, Zeke (the Lion) kills a giant spider who is terrorizing the animals in the forest. And finally they reach Glinda… and what do you think Dorothy finds??? That the silver shoes she was wearing had the power to take her back all along.

Dorothy has had the most enchanting experience and tearfully says good bye to her friends. Glinda uses the Golden Cap to transport the Tinman, Lion and Scarecrow back to their homes and bids Dorothy goodbye as she makes her wish to the silver shoes to take her home where she returns safe and sound, except that she loses her shoes.
